Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has picked the likes of Hardik Pandya and Prithvi Shaw as the captaincy options for the Indian Cricket Team in the future. Pandya, recently, led India to a 1-0 win in the three-match T20I series against New Zealand.
Pandya also led the Gujarat franchise to their maiden Indian T20 League title this year. Looking at his results as a captain in the shortest format for the Indian team and in the Indian T20 League, he is tipped to be India’s next full-time skipper in the shortest format.
"Hardik Pandya obviously is in line. But that's going to be unfortunate for Rohit because I think judging his captaincy in only one ICC event is not the right way to probably judge him," Gambhir said at an event organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Surprisingly, Gautam Gambhir also named Prithvi Shaw as an ideal candidate to lead the Indian team in the coming future. Shaw hasn’t been in the scheme of things for the selectors for some time now. He played his last international match in July 2021.
"The reason I've picked Prithvi Shaw, I know a lot of people talk about his off-field activities, but that is what the job of the coach and the selectors are. The selectors' job isn't just to pick the 15, but also to get people walk the right path." Gambhir said
"Prithvi Shaw is one I feel can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain because you see that aggression in the way a person plays the sport," he added.
Meanwhile, India are currently trailing 0-1 in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. The third and the final ODI is slated to be played on Wednesday.
