The Indian team showed their might with the bat as they scored 356/2 from 50 overs. The day belonged to two players who ruined Pakistan’s plans with the ball. KL Rahul scored a delightful century on his comeback to the Indian team. Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli joined in the run-fest as he scored his 47th ODI ton for India. The 34-year-old also became the fastest batter to go past 13,000 runs in the ODI format. Team India’s 356/2 was their highest-ever score against Pakistan in ODI cricket.
The heat and the humidity of Colombo weather had already gotten to the Pakistani bowlers. Haris Rauf had already pulled out after suffering an injury on Sunday. This meant that the workload of bowling the final few overs was on Faheem Ashraf.
Virat Kohli hits four after playing an audacious shot
Virat Kohli was batting on 108 when he wanted to play the scoop shot initially. The batter saw Ashraf bowl the ball wide outside off stump and changed his stance at the last moment. This is when Kohli, used deft touch to trickle the ball down to third man as the ball sped for four runs.
Babar Azam had put India into bat on Sunday after winning the toss. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India the perfect start. The two openers added 121 runs for the opening wicket in quick time. Both the openers scored half-centuries before falling in back–to–back overs.
When rain came down India was placed at 147/2 after having played 24.1 overs. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli went in as the overnight batters as reserve day came into effect. Once the match started on Monday after the rain delay there was no respite for the opposition bowlers.
KL Rahul scored his 6th ODI century as he stayed not out on 111. His knock came off 106 deliveries with the help of 12 fours and 2 sixes. Kohli was not out on 122 a knock which came off just 94 balls. The former Indian skipper hit 9 fours and 3 sixes as he scored his 47th ODI ton. Kohli is now just two centuries behind the great Sachin Tendulkar from tying his ODI record for most centuries.
