In the Indian team's 18-member squad, Hardik Pandya has been announced as vice-captain in the squad for the Asia Cup 2023, which is set to begin on August 30 in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Rohit Sharma will be leading the side as Team India will be playing their first game in September against their arch-rivals, Pakistan. Interestingly, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah are returning to the ODI squad after recovering from injuries for the continental championship. If we include wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson in the announced squad then the count is 18, because Samson is a backup player.
In the tournament, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal are taking part. All six teams are divided into two groups, A and B. India, Pakistan, and Nepal are in Group A, while Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are on the opposite table. Pakistan and Bangladesh have already announced their Asia Cup squads. This year's Asia Cup fixtures are scheduled to be in the 50-over format
"In West Indies, we saw some real promise in terms of not just performances but the temperament. And it gives us an opportunity to take him with the team, and give him some more exposure; a left-hander again, looks very promising. So, fortunately, we can take 17 here, it'll be 15 at the World Cup. So when the time comes we'll take that decision, but at the moment it at least gives the coach and captain an opportunity to have him with the squad," said Agarkar.
Tilak Varma rose to glory riding on his impressive IPL 2023 campaign
Looking at Varma’s career, his fame and glory came with Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 performances for Mumbai Indians. After that, he received a maiden call for the Indian side during the recently concluded West Indies tour. He became the highest run scorer of Team India on slow pitches in the T20Is. Pakistan and Bangladesh have already announced their Asia Cup squads. This year's Asia Cup fixtures are scheduled to be in the 50-over format.
India opens their Asia Cup campaign against Pakistan on September 2, before playing Nepal on September 4. Both games will be played in Pallekele, with the top two sides of the group progressing through to the Super 4s. There they will play three more games. After the Asia Cup, India will also play three ODIs at home against Australia prior to opening their World Cup campaign, also against Australia, on October 8 in Chennai.
India's 17-man Asia Cup squad: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.

Rinku more deserving also than tilak
Our selectors , @BCCI and Capt has been making a mistake of taking T20 performance as benchmark for ODI. This will finally take us no where close to WC. Sky has been an example tried and failed and still we are backing T20 performance fr ODI. Opp teams knows this better.
