Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful captains in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), having led Mumbai Indians to glory five times. Following Virat Kohli's term as Indian captain, the Mumbai cricketer took Team India's leadership position across all formats. Everyone had high hopes for Rohit, but it is clear that he was unable to replicate his IPL success with the Men in Blue.
Apart from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 and a few bilateral series, Rohit has nothing in his portfolio to show as the Indian captain. Asia Cup 2022 and 2022 T20 World Cup were the chance for the 36-year-old to take his national team to major successes, but all India had were heartbreaking exits. The recent failure of Rohit as a captain was in the 2021-23 World Test Championship (WTC) final.
India suffered a 209-run defeat against Australia in the Ultimate Test at The Oval in June and continued their drought for a major international trophy. Since then, Rohit's captaincy has been heavily criticised and there were even reports that his future as India's Test captain would be considered after India's ongoing West Indies tour.
Does India have a perfect replacement for Rohit?
However, the question remains as to whether India have a better replacement for Rohit as Test captain at present. Earlier, India tried to pass the baton to KL Rahul, but it did not provide the desired results. Meanwhile, former Sri Lanka pacer Chaminda Vaas has suggested that India's middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer could be the best replacement for Rohit in India's longer format.
"Shreyas Iyer will be the best captain. In his first Test, he scored a hundred and he has good leadership skills. The way I see it, he can handle the team. He will be the best option going forward," Vaas said.
Having led Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, Iyer will bring his experience to the table if given the chance to lead Team India. Meanwhile, Rohit and Co. have started their 2023-25 WTC on a positive note by winning the two-match series against West Indies 1-0.
