Babar Azam has been one of the most consistent Pakistani players as the Pakistan skipper ranks in the top-five world rankings in all forms of cricket for batting. The 28-year-old is also compared with many modern greats like Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, and Joe Root. Players like Mohammad Rizwan have also shown great responsibility and scored consistently.
Former Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal thinks that the Pakistan skipper should play for a long time as there is no other batsman who can set new records. He also said that to focus more on his batting Babar has to leave the captaincy. It is established that the pressure of leading the team in all three formats has affected his batting strongly as many suspect.
“He should play for long, as after him, we aren’t able to see a batsman as solid as him,” he was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.
Babar’s hard run during the 20-20 World Cup 2022
The Babar-led team were able to qualify for the finals of the 20-20 World Cup 2022, but they lost the match against the English side in the decider which cost them the World Cup trophy. Despite reaching the finals, the 28-year-old was heavily criticized for his captaincy by former Pakistan players. He was also criticized for not leaving his opening slot.
The Lahore-born batter has failed to impress with his captaincy skills and it his outing with the bat in the World Cup was also dismal as he was able to score only 124 runs with an average of 17.71 at a poor strike rate of 93.23. Following a string of poor performances, both with the bat and as a captain, the former number-one-ranked T20I batter has been advised by many former Pakistani cricketers to leave his role as a skipper.
Pakistan will be playing against England in a three-match Test series starting on December 1. Babar will be aiming to get his form back and have some runs under his name. He is currently stands number three in Tests for batting. He has smashed 7 Test tons as of now and has scored 3,122 runs with an average of 47.3 in 75 innings.
