Luis Suarez Miramontes, widely recognized as one of Spain's best footballers of all time, died at the age of 88 on Sunday. He was a midfielder for Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Sampdoria from 1953 to 1973. Miramontes' abilities were noticed when he won the Ballon d'Or in 1960. Miramontes played as a midfielder for Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Sampdoria between 1953 and 1973.

He also guided the Spanish national side to the second round of the World Cup in Italia 1990. He is known as 'The Architect' for pioneering the modern attacking midfielder role. Suarez began his career as an inside forward for one of Barcelona's finest teams in the 1950s before joining Inter Milan in the 1960s.

Luis Suarez's career

During his stay at Barcelona, he helped the club win two La Liga titles. His most notable personal success was winning the Ballon d'Or ahead of Real Madrid great Ferenc Puskss in 1960. He was a key member of Inter's Grande Inter team, which won three Series A titles and two straight European Cups and is recognised as the best team in Inter's history.

Despite playing as a deep-lying playmaker, he made 328 games for Inter and scored 55 goals between 1961 and 1970. Suarez represented Spain in the 1962 and 1966 World Cups, appearing in 32 games and scoring 14 goals. His biggest triumph at the national level was winning the 1964 European Championship, Spain's last international title until winning the 2008 World Cup.

His coaching career began in 1973 when he took over as a manager of Genoa. During his career, he managed a variety of Italian clubs, including three stints at Inter. Inter paid tribute on social media, saying: “A unique talent and a great Inter fan. The number 10 of Grande Inter who brought our colours to the roof of Italy, Europe and the world.”

His former club Barcelona wrote: "Football legend. Barca legend." The club then listed his titles with the club before writing: "We will really miss you. Rest in peace, Luis Suárez Miramontes." He is one of the game's greats and will be sorely missed by Barcelona and Inter supporters, as well as the rest of Spain.
