When the AFCON winners Senegal were drawn against Euro 2020 Finalists England, every football fan expected it to be a closely contested affair. It was anything but! Let's see how the FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 match played out:
England vs Senegal (3-0)
England brought on Jordan Henderson for this match for the sole purpose of keeping defensive solidity in the side. The Liverpool captain however defied belief in the 38th minute as he latched onto a Jude Bellingham pass to take England ahead. The goal was scored against the run of play as the African team had looked the most threatening team.
Since the first goal however the weight of the game shifted in England's favour as they began to control the ball with Senegal having no answers for the Gareth Southgate-coached team. England put the cherry on top of their first-half performance with a Harry Kane goal in 45+3 minute.
Senegal did not come out stronger in the second half and were out of contention as England had a complete hold of the game. Just 12 minutes into the game, Bukayo Saka chipped in a goal to take England out of reach of Senegal.
With this win, England have booked a Quarterfinal meeting with 2018 FIFA World Cup winners France. The winner of that match will certainly become the favourites for the FIFA World Cup 2022 title in Qatar.
So far, England have joined France, Argentina, and the Netherlands as the four quarterfinalists at the FIFA World Cup 2022.
