FIFA World Cup 2022: Group D- France stunned by Tunisia, Denmark lose out Round of 16 place to Australia

The two final matches of Group C brought two do-or-die matches which provided euphoria for some and heartbreak for others. Let's look at how the two games panned out.

Australia vs Denmark

Australia needed a win or their qualification to the Round of 16 while Denmark needed the same. Both teams played out a high intensity 0-0 in the first half in a game that kept everyone on the edge of their seat.

It was eventually Mathew Lackie who gave Australia the lead against Denmark. Denmark did not have any answers for Australia as they could not get the ball past the goal line. In the end, Austarlia were able to hold onto the small lead and came up victorious. As a result of this win, Australia have qualified for the Round of 16 at FIFA World Cup 2022.

Tunisia vs France

Tunisia came into their final match to prove that they belonged and they did exactly that. All of their hopes remained on a win against France and a draw between Australia and Denmark. Tunisia started the game with courage and kept the World Cup 2018 winners to a 0-0 at halftime.

They came out all guns blazing in the second half as Tunisia's captainWahbi Khazri scored a sensational solo goal in the 58th minute to give Tunisia a lead. France tried to clap back then after and put all men behind the ball. It looked like their plan worked as Antoine Griezmann scored a late goal in 90+8 minutes. The match referee had whistled for the end of the match but then seemed to indicate a goal check.

Upon VAR check it was found that the goal was indeed an offside one and France's equaliser was scrapped. Tunisia fans went euphoric as they got a famous win against France. Although their win could not do much for their qualification as Australia from the other match were the ones to qualify for the Round of 16.
