The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw the tournament return to its pre-COVID-19 home-and-away form while also undergoing a few changes. The introduction of the impact player rule and players being able to challenge on-field umpire's wide ball calls has spiced up the competition. However, there are still ways to improve the game, and former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has proposed two new changes that might make the battle even more intense.

The IPL 2023 season has neared its final stage as four more league matches are left but we still don't know who the final three teams in the playoffs will be. Only the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) have secured a play-off berth so far, thanks to their dominant campaign. Six teams are contending for the final three spots: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

While Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are out of the race, either CSK, MI, LSG and RCB has a better chance of making it to the knockout stage. CSK will play DC in the afternoon match on Saturday (May 20), while LSG will have the advantage of knowing the exact run-rate required to overcome CSK when they play KKR in the second match. The same advantage will be enjoyed by RCB over MI, who will play the final league encounter against GT on Sunday.

Here are the changes Chopra wants to see from next IPL:

In light of the current playoff scenario, former KKR batter and current commentator Chopra took to Twitter on Saturday to propose two changes to the IPL from next season. The 45-year-old suggested the introduction of bonus points for winning a game by a huge margin and the provision of starting games in the final leg at the same time.

"There are two changes that I’d propose for next season’s IPL

1. Introduction of the Bonus Points for winning a game with a huge margin. NRR is absolute but over 14 games is a tough math to understand. Bonus point is a tangible reward for playing significantly better. And also, keeps the interest alive for longer.

2. Provision of starting the games in the final leg at the same time. Today, LSG has the advantage of knowing the exact math to go over CSK on NRR…because CSK plays first. Same for tomorrow depending on today’s results. Thoughts welcome," Chopra tweeted.
