The historical Ashes series, which will begin on June 16 at Edgbaston in Birmingham, has set the stage for another Australia vs. England rivalry. Australia will go into the series after being crowned world Test champions in the 2021-23 cycle, while England will be coming off a dominant victory against Ireland.

The competition has already been spiced up, with England captain Ben Stokes' confirming that they will be going ahead with their "successful" 'bazball' style of play in the Ashes 2023. Cricket fans are excited to be exposed to England's aggressive batting approach and Australia's bowling onslaught.

England announced their playing XI for the first Test of the five-match series on Wednesday. They picked Stuart Broad to join James Anderson and Ollie Robinson in the pace attack, while Mark Wood missed out. Spinner Moeen Ali, who returned to Test cricket after withdrawing from retirement, also found a place.

He has been an unbelievable performer over many years: Stokes heaps praise on Stuart Broad

With the tournament already spiced up with talk of player match-ups between the two teams, skipper Stokes has issued a statement that will be a delight to witness in the high-profile red-ball encounter. Stokes said Broad's selection was based on his record against Aussie opener David Warner. The right-arm pacer had dismissed Warner seven times in 10 innings during the 2019 campaign. Stokes also drew parallels with his match-up against World No. 1 Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin.

"It’s just one of those things – like Ashwin against me. ‘Broady’ has been an unbelievable performer over many years. What the Ashes brings, it’s so hard to look past someone like that. It’s so hard to look past Jimmy and ‘Robbo’ as well, he’s been incredible over the last year in all conditions. I’m very happy with the team we’ve ended up picking," the English all-rounder said.

Meanwhile, Australia captain Pat Cummins expressed confidence in their veteran batter, saying that we will see a different Warner this time. "Davey’s, I’m sure, been thinking about Broad a lot over the last four years and if he got another chance how he is going to play against him. It didn’t go Davey’s way last time, but we’ll see a different Davey this time," Cummins said.
