According to a recent interview on Daily Mail, former English skipper Joe Root has expressed his desire to be a part of the glamorous and cash-rich Indian T20 league. Root is considering making himself available for the Indian T20 League 2023 auction, which is slated to take place on December 23 in Kochi.
Root has made it clear that he isn't retiring from any form of the game but feels like he has been alienated from the shortest format as he hasn't played enough of it.
"I would certainly debate going into the IPL draw quite seriously and hope to get exposure in that tournament. It would be great to get involved in the continuous enormity of each game and how much it means. I have no thoughts or feelings of retirement or slowing down or playing fewer formats. If anything, I feel a little bit more freedom with my time. I always used to get rested for the T20s and I feel like I got alienated from the format because I had not played enough of it," Root told dailymail.co.uk.
The Englishman boasts an average of 35.72 in T20 internationals but has not featured in a single game since 2019. Joe Root played his last game for the world T20 champions against Pakistan in Cardiff. He scored 47 runs from 42 deliveries in that game while chasing a challenging 175.
The famous red-ball cricketer has not got the opportunity to shine in the Indian T20 league as he has not appeared in the auction since 2018. Root player went unsold in the 2018 auction and has not made the list since then. Talking to the media, he mentioned that with the World Cup coming next, it will be beneficial for him to take part in the cash-rich league.
“With a 50-over World Cup next year, there are areas of my game that can benefit from playing more short-form cricket”
It remains interesting to see if any team puts in the bid for the 31-year-old in the upcoming mini-auction.
