Armband

India is taking on England today in the 29th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. India is coming in this contest on the back of 5 consecutive victories and has been unbeaten in the tournament so far. On the other hand, defending champions England in contrast to everyone’s expectations has been below par so far in this tournament and have managed to win only 1 out of the 5 matches they’ve played till now.

When team India came in for the National Anthem before the start of play, all the players were seen wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for India’s one of greatest left-arm spinner and former captain Bishan Singh Bedi. Bishan Singh Bedi, legendary leg-spinner and former India captain passed away at 77 on October 23. He played 67 Tests for India between 1967 and 1979, taking 266 wickets, and was instrumental in India's first ODI win.

Hailing from Amritsar, Bedi demonstrated his skill while playing for Delhi in domestic competitions and remains the top wicket-taker among Indian cricketers in First-Class cricket, having secured 1,560 wickets in 370 matches. Bedi also participated in English County cricket, representing Northamptonshire in 102 matches from 1972 to 1977, where he took 434 wickets for the Northants."

India lost early wickets after being put into bat

England won the toss and invited India to bat first on a used surface at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The wicket looked a bit slow and two-paced and the batter never looked comfortable on the pitch. England got the early wicket of Shubhman Gill courtesy of Chris Woakes who bowled Gill on an in-swinging delivery.

Soon after India got another big blow when Virat Kohli got out on a duck in the quest of hitting David Willey over mid-off and Iyer followed Kohli as he again got out on a short delivery by Woakes. India’s hopes are now lingering on captain Rohit Sharma who has scored a classy half-century on a difficult track and KL Rahul is complementing him quite well as they both took India to 100 runs at the end of 25 overs who once was struggling at 40 for 3.
