In what will be the end of one of the most cherished associations in the Indian T20 League, Kieron Pollard announces retirement from the Indian T20 League, bringing down the curtains on his 13-year stint with the Mumbai franchise. He has been one of the most valuable players for Mumbai when he played for them.
The Mumbai side has now decided to release Pollard, and he has been appointed as a batting coach of the franchise. In his statement, he thanked the owners of the Mumbai franchise, Akash Ambani, Nita Ambani and Mukesh Ambani. "Once an MI always an MI," is what Pollard said in his statement.
He has scored 3412 runs in 189 matches for the Men from Mumbai at an average of 28.67. Pollard was also a useful option with the ball for the Mumbai franchise, where he picked up 34 wickets across the Indian T20 League. He was introduced to the Mumbai family by his good friend Dwayne Bravo.
He was an integral part of the Mumbai side, where he played primarily as a middle-order batter and often bailed out his side from tricky situations. The all-rounder formed a triumvirate in the middle order with Krunal Pandya and Hardik Pandya. They formed the core of a strong hard-hitting middle order for the franchise for a long period.
He was fondly called “Polly Kaka” by the fans of Mumbai. He caught the eyes of the famed coaching setup of the Mumbai franchise in 2009 when he played some breathtaking innings for his home region, Trinidad and Tobago. The star player was immediately given a contract with the Mumbai franchise in 2010.
He has been an indispensable part of the Mumbai side from then on and has never looked back. He has not changed bases in the Indian T20 League and like Virat Kohli, he also is the select few who had a longstanding association with only one franchise and that turned out to be Mumbai. Notably, he has won five Indian T20 League titles with the franchise.
