'Embarrassing for this iconic number' - Fans react as Manchester United reveal Mason Mount's jersey number

Versatile midfielder Mason Mount officially signed for Manchester United on Wednesday (July 5) and the club have now revealed his jersey number. The England international will wear the iconic No. 7 jersey that were worn by renowned players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and David Beckham.

It was reported that United considered giving the No.7 shirt to winger Alejandro Garnacho, but Mount has been picked to carry on a legacy of the club's legends. Garnacho had even shared several posts on social media indicating that he want to wear the iconic shirt.

Ronaldo was the most recent holder of the No. 7 jersey for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns. Now, Mount will wear it with pride as he aims to make a mark on the Premier League stage.

Mount was eventually purchased by United for £60 million ($76 million) after the Chelsea rejected three of their bids. The Red Devils were keen to land the 24-year-old during the summer transfer window, but it was rumoured that they would give up their pursuit if the Bules rejected their third bid.

Mount stated of his transfer to United: “It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career. Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies.

“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here. I am hugely ambitious; I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United," he added.
