Following 18 years in the Nou Camp, legendary Barcelona player Sergio Busquets has confirmed he will quit the team when his contract expires this summer. Busquets stated in a clip posted to Twitter that he will not be renewing his contract with Barcelona when it finishes at the end of the ongoing season despite having spent his whole career as a player at the club wherein his father previously played. Since 2021, Busquets has served as the club's captain.

The 34-year-old originally joined Barcelona from his childhood club, Jabac Terrassa when he was just 15. The player went on to feature in 700+ games for the La Liga outfit in a career spanning 18 years. During this time, he won 23 major awards, including eight LaLiga championships and three Champions Leagues.

Busquets has remained a consistent first team player for Barcelona throughout his career, making at least 30 performances among his 15 seasons for the senior team. His ascent served as a symbol for the Pep Guardiola generation in Catalonia; the current Barcelona manager, Xavi, and Andres Iniesta formed a strong midfield triangle after he made his La Liga debut under the then-new manager in September 2008. In his first season, at the age of 19, he appeared 41 times and won his maiden La Liga, Champions League, and Copa Del Rey championships.

Sergio Busquests spoke in the video about his dreams when he joined and also spoke about his retirement. He said, β€œIt has been an unforgettable journey. Since I was a child coming to the matches, or watching them on TV, I always dreamed of playing with this shirt at this stadium. The reality has exceeded all my dreams. I wouldn't have believed you if you told me when I arrived as a youth player that I would play 15 seasons for the best club in the world, the club of my life, of which I have been, am and always will be a fan, member, player, captain, and surpass 700 matches."

With Iniesta remaining a regular player with the Japanese team and Xavi serving as the current manager of Barcelona, Busquets' farewell match for the club may be a recently planned exhibition match versus Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on June 6.
