The encounter between Mumbai and UP in the ongoing Women's T20 League on Sunday night witnessed some strange drama on the field. The technology-involved controversial incident happened when Hayley Matthews was given out by the third umpire while Mumbai were chasing down a target of 160 runs. However, the decision was later overturned and the Mumbai opener returned to the middle, but it certainly upset her and left cricket fans confused.

The freak incident took place when West Indies all-rounder Matthews was on strike in the fifth over of the innings. Sophie Ecclestone bowled the fifth bowl of the over and appealed for an LBW. On-field umpire Paschim Pathak gave it not out, but the decision was reviewed by UP, which was then given out by the third umpire. Matthews was seen upset after seeing the ball hit the pad and three reds for ball tracking on replay. Before she decided to walk off, she had a small chat with the opponent captain Alyssa Healy.

A second life for Hayley Matthews

However, no one would have thought that this was just the beginning of a drama as we all witnessed something never seen before in the history of cricket. The third umpire's DRS decision was challenged once again. It wasn’t challenged by the Mumbai batter, but was asked by the on-field umpires to re-check as they were not convinced with the original DRS decision.

Initially, the third umpire showed another part of the replay which showed the ball hitting the boot first. However, the second time replay was shown correctly and made the umpire to realize his mistake and overturn his decision. Eventually, Matthews was declared not out but the all-rounder could not capitalize on her second life as she was dismissed by the same bowler for 12 off 17 balls.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's brilliant half-century (53* off 33) and superb knocks from opener Yastika Bhatia (42 off 27) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (45* off 31) handed Mumbai their fifth straight win. Earlier, UP scored 159 runs on the back of half-centuries from captain Healy (58 off 46) and Tahlia McGrath (50 off 37). Saika Ishaque once again shined with the ball for Mumbai, taking three wickets in four overs. Amelia Kerr took two wickets and Matthews one wicket each.
