Australia and South Africa locked horns in the First Test of the three-Test match series. The first Test was held at the Gabba in Brisbane. The pitch at the Gabba has had the reputation of being one of the fastest pitches in Australia. It has even notched up the pitch at Perth in this regard.
South Africa had an underwhelming performance with the bat in the first innings as they were castled for just 152. Temba Bavuma scored 38 off 70 balls, with three fours. Kyle Verreynne came in the middle order and hit 64 off 96 balls, with eight fours and 1 six. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon were the wreckers in chief in the first innings as they picked up 3-41 and 3-14, respectively. Pat Cummins and Scott Boland picked up 2-35 and 2-28.
South Africa came out breathing fire in the first innings when they were bowling, and David Warner was sent back by Kagiso Rabada for a first-ball duck. Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne got out for just 11 each to Andrich Nortje and Marco Jansen.
Then, Steven Smith rebuilt the innings by scoring 36 off 68 balls, with three fours. South Africa thought they had some parity restored when they got Smith and Scott Boland out in the closing stages of the game. But Travis Head played a wonderful knock of 92 off 96 balls, with 13 fours and 1 six. Australia were all out for 218 in their first innings. Australia got a valuable lead of 66 heading into the second innings.
34 wickets fell within two days at the Gabba
South Africa fared worse in the second innings. They capitulated for just 99 runs. Starc got 2-26 in the second innings and when he bowled Van der Dussen he joined the 300 wickets club. Cummins got 5-42, while Boland picked up 2-14 and Lyon got just one wicket in the second innings.
Temba Bavuma and Khaya Zondo were the only two batters who got into double figures in the second innings. Bavuma scored 29 off 61, with three fours and Zondo scored 36 off 85 balls, with 6 fours. South Africa got only a 33-run lead and Australia were set a target of 34.
Australia lost 4 wickets in the chase but somehow huffed and puffed and got there in the end. The Aussies ended the Test match at 35-4.

@davidwarner31 is not taking the strike against Rabada bowling.

Is he afraid to face Rabada??
#AUSvsSA #Warner
It’s been fun but it’s all happened too quickly.

Pitch too grassy and green especially when you have two outstanding bowling units who don’t need generous conditions to have an impact. #AUSvsSA
This pitch has been always a bowling content...Gabba test match...outstanding spell by #Cummins and #Starc...#AUSvsSA

#AUSvsSA match at Gabba is going to finish on 2nd day inside 150 overs. Everyone will praise the performances of the fast bowlers from the both sides on the green pitch. Next year when Aus will come to India, they'll start ranting about the spinning tracks. @bhogleharsha#WTC23 pic.twitter.com/PCd0djEWqG

No point having a competitive bowling attack for Australian conditions if your batters can’t get the runs to bowl with #AUSvsSA #proteas

Great day of test cricket in Brisbane. Australia finish day one slightly AHEAD of the game. #AUSvsSA #AUSvRSA

This at the Gabba isn't unplayable but a very difficult pitch to bat on. Almost too difficult. A proper, spicy Andhra curry that is edible but leaves you gasping.....
