India and Sri Lanka are locking horns in the third and final ODI of the series at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram. Indian captain Rohit Sharma called it correctly at the toss and elected to bat first. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill walked out to the middle to give a blazing start to their side.
Both started their innings conservatively as none of them got off the mark in the first two overs. Gill played 10 dot balls to start his innings and scored an exquisite boundary against Lahiru Kumara in the third over of the innings to get off the mark. He further scored two boundaries in the very next over against Kasun Rajitha to get his innings going.
After he got into the groove, Gill launched an onslaught on Lahiru Kumara and smacked four consecutive boundaries to get his strike rate over 100. Both batters found their feet quickly and brought up the fifty-run stand after 8 overs.
Throughout their partnership, both Rohit and Gill took turns in attacking the bowlers one by one to keep the run rate soaring high. The opening partnership was ended on 91 as Rohit was dismissed by Chamika Karunaratne. At the other end, Gill continued his innings and brought up his fifty in 52 balls in the 19th over.
Gill found support from the other end as Virat Kohli joined him at the crease. The duo took the Indian innings forward as they rotated the strike and found occasional boundaries. Gill gradually built on his innings and was batting in the 80s in the 28th over and smashed a six and a four against Nuwanidu Fernando to move into the 90s.
Shubman Gill brought up his second ODI hundred in 89 balls
He took no further risks and reached the three-figure mark in the 30th over in just 89 deliveries to bring up his second ODI hundred. After reaching his hundred, the opener unleashed his beast mode on Sri Lanka and scored three boundaries in the very next over.
His stunning innings was ended as he was cleaned up by Kasun Rajitha in the 34th over after scoring 116 off 97 balls. He added 131 runs with Kohli for the third wicket. Gill once again impressed everyone with his stellar knock as fans were elated to see him amongst the runs. Here are some of the reactions on Gill’s magnificent hundred on Twitter:

Shubman Gill is tailor made for ODI format. Great consistency at a young age. Would be a shame if he doesn't get to play as many ODIs as Kohli/Rohit did.

Shubman Gill has not only sealed his spot for the opening but has also made sure with his consistent run of late that you can't keep him out for too long.

Shubman Gill closed the door forever for Shikhar Dhawan in ODIs, Grabbed the opportunity well. I think India will go with GILL-ROHIT as opener in WC.#INDvSL #ShubmanGill #shikhardhawan pic.twitter.com/bu5xrNV3Fn

Shubman Gill has got all the skills to become the next batting stalwart India is looking for. Just need to up his game in the middle overs. Sometimes looks like he's too content on playing safe, hopefully with experience he will start dominating more

Shubman Gill has better eye sight, technically sound, Classy and has plenty of time to play the shots. Especially fearless against fast bowling. He is the future star & can join the list of Gavaskar, Tendulkar,Kohli…
