In a thrilling encounter, Chennai faced off against Gujarat in the opening match of the Indian T20 League 2023 season. The match was held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and it did not disappoint the fans who had been eagerly waiting for the start of the season.

The Chennai', batting first, got off to a solid start, thanks to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who played a brilliant innings of 92 off 50 balls. His knock included 9 sixes and 4 fours and provided the foundation for the Chennai innings. However, the rest of the Chennai batting line-up struggled to get going against a disciplined Gujarat bowling attack. Dhoni, who remained not out on 14 off 7 balls, played a few trademark shots to take the score to a respectable 178/7. Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan, and Alzarri Joseph took 2 wickets each for the Gujarat.

Chasing 179, Gujarat got off to a good start, with Shubman Gill playing a fantastic innings of 63 off just 36 balls. He hit 6 fours and 3 sixes and kept Gujarat in the game throughout his stay at the crease. The other Gujarat batters, however, failed to build on his innings, and the Chennai bowlers managed to pick up wickets at crucial intervals. At one stage, Gujarat were struggling at 156/5, but Rahul Tewatia (15) and Rashid Khan (10) held their nerve and guided the team home with an over to spare.
