Manchester City kept their Premier League title hopes alive with a 4-1 comeback victory over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. City, who were missing Erling Haaland due to injury, fell behind early on to a Mohamed Salah goal but responded quickly to tie the game through Julian Alvarez, who led the line in Haaland's absence.
Pep Guardiola's rampant side built a comfortable lead in the second half to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal, who play later on Saturday. The match began in a high-tempo yet cagey manner, reflecting both City's title hopes and Liverpool's attempts to force a rise towards the top four.
However, Salah stunned the hosts by scoring on the 17th minute, his fourth goal in as many games against City this season. The ball was left for Salah to power through and fire home emphatically past Ederson after Diogo Jota's perfectly executed run beyond City's back line was not dealt with.
However, 10 minutes later, Alvarez scored his 13th goal to level the game. Ilkay Gundogan's incisive move found Jack Grealish in space down Liverpool's right flank. His low ball into the middle was swept home by Alvarez, giving Guardiola's side a fighting chance.
City took the lead through De Bruyne less than a minute into the second half. With an inch-perfect cross-field pass, Alvarez found the onrushing Riyad Mahrez, who played a simple ball into De Bruyne, who slid home past Alisson.
With the momentum in their favour, City punished Liverpool even more, with Gundogan scoring their third goal in the 54th minute. Alvarez was once again heavily involved in the run-up. His quick feet assisted in getting the ball out on the right flank, and he found his way back into the box to shoot against Trent Alexander-Arnold. The effort was deflected into the path of Gundogan, who slotted home from close range to increase City's lead.
Grealish added to Jurgen Klopp's side's misery 16 minutes from time when he slid the ball past Alisson after a nice combination with De Bruyne, giving City their 17th goal in their last three games. With a game in hand, Liverpool is now sixth in the league table, seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
