India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has successfully undergone back surgery in the UK after suffering an injury on Day 3 of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad. According to reports, the surgery took place in London on Tuesday and the Mumbai batter is expected to return to full fitness ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023 later this year.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper is currently missing the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and will also miss the World Test Championship (WTC) final which will be played at Oval in London in June.

“Shreyas Iyer underwent a successful surgery on Tuesday in London. In fact, he walked a bit too yesterday,” reported the Times of India.

Earlier, the KKR management expressed hope that Iyer would return mid-season and lead the team in the remaining matches of IPL 2023. However, the right-handed batter is likely to be out for the next three months for his recovery period, meaning Nitish Rana will continue to be their skipper.

After recovering from the same back issue, the 28-year-old returned to the Indian team for the 2023 BGT series against Australia. Iyer played the first three Test matches, but on the third day of the final Test, he once again sustained the injury that forced him to be ruled out.

India will be without three key players for WTC final

Iyer is a key player for Team India in both the 50-over format and Test cricket. Iyer, who has been solid for India in the No. 4 position, will undoubtedly be missed when India square up against the Aussies in the Test Championship final. Apart from him, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant also will miss the marquee event.

Meanwhile, Australia announced their 17-memenr squad for the WTC on Wednesday. David Warner has been retained in the squad. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh and wicket-keeper batter Josh Inglis are also set to make a comeback in the longer format.

Australia’s squad for the WTC final and first two Ashes Tests: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc, David Warner.
