The 16th season of the Indian T20 League started with a bang as defending champions Gujarat beat Chennai in the season opener on Friday. On Saturday Punjab beat Kolkata in the first game while Delhi was thrashed by Lucknow in the second game of the day. Delhi, who is playing without their regular skipper Rishabh Pant, were led by Australian superstar David Warner. Notably, Delhi is set to face Gujarat in their first home game on April 4. Meanwhile, after their game against Lucknow, Warner joined broadcasters to speak about upcoming games.
Speaking about their game against defending champions Gujarat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on April 4, Warner said that the team is well prepared and will be looking to perform well. However, while talking about his last game at Delhi Warner made a mistake as he said that he last played there in 2011. Although, India legend Sunil Gavaskar tried to remind him about his last game at Delhi which came just a month ago during Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Speaking with broadcaster Warner said, "We go back to Delhi in front of our home crowd. I know it's a batting wicket. The last time, I was there in Delhi back in 2011, it was low and slow. Now I saw a bit of green grass on that surface. There will be a bit of dew in the night. If we can get an all-round good wicket, it would be fantastic."
Reminding him with a cheeky reply Gavaskar said, "David last time you were there in Delhi in 2011-12? You were there last month!" After that Warner asked him to forget about that game as it was on a different path with a different ball. He said, "Yeah, I know that. That was a different pitch, it was a red ball. Let's forget that."
Warner has led Delhi in the first game with a decent performance as the team lost their first game in Lucknow. Although, while chasing 194 runs Warner scored a decent half-century and tried to control the run chase. However, he failed and couldn’t get his team to another side of the line. He scored 56 runs off 48 balls with the help of seven boundaries. His innings didn’t help the team to win the game as other players didn’t support him well.
However, for Lucknow, it was Kyle Mayers and Mark Wood who performed exceptionally. Mayers scored 73 off 38 balls with the help of seven 6s and two boundaries. While Wood clinched five wickets and destroyed Delhi's run chase.
