Danushka Gunathilaka returned to a local court in Sydney Downing Centre after he had put forth a demand that his bail conditions be reviewed. He was arrested by the Sydney Police department for an alleged case of sexual assault. He was charged with four counts of sexual abuse that took place without any consent.

Now, according to Cricwire, Gunathilaka has been granted bail on sexual assault charges after the court heard he has support from the Sri Lanka cricket association and the government. A surety of 200,000 Dollars (INR 1.09) crore was offered. This is the latest happening about the cricketer from Sri Lanka.

Gunathilaka has represented Sri Lanka in 8 Tests, 47 ODIs and 46 T20Is. He had been suspended by the Sri Lankan Cricket Board from all forms of the game and now this news comes as a rapid turn of events. The left-hander was initially denied bail.

He tried to choke the victim thrice during the sexual assault

It was said a few days back that the victim was choked repeatedly and was “fearing for her life” during her alleged sexual assault according to media reports and police documents. The victim also alleged that Gunathilaka tried to choke her three times during the sexual assault.

Gunathilaka was arrested for sexual assault a short while after Sri Lanka lost to England in their last 20-20 World Cup game. He did not travel with the team and was staying in Sydney. He had played only one warm-up fixture against Namibia and played only one first-round match against Zimbabwe before he was ruled out of the 20-20 World Cup due to injury.

The cricketer did not travel back with the team when they returned home after their 20-20 World Cup campaign. He was arrested at the team hotel by the Sydney Police. He is not new to controversies as he was given a six-month ban when he violated the team’s bio-secure bubble when Sri Lanka toured England in 2021 along with teammates Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella.
