Dambulla Aura opener Avishka Fernando was brilliant as he scored an unbeaten 70 runs in 49 balls. As a result of this, Aura beat the Galle Titans by seven wickets in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023. At the start of the play, Kusal Medis-led Aura won the toss and elected to field first, Titans batted first and scored 133/9 runs in 20 overs, while the Dambulla-based side chased down the required target with 14 balls remaining.
It was a clinical run chase, led by Dambulla's opening batter, who batted till the end and ensured that his side ended in the winning position. Fernando was also awarded player of the match for his 70-run mark, including three sixes and the same number of boundaries. The 25-year-old did not start his inning in a pristine manner but later played fluently as the powerplay arrived. Sadeera Samarawickrama, who came at one down position, was vital in the middle phases and gave proper support to take the pressure off Avishka, as Sadeera scored 25 (18).

Whereas in the first innings, no batter shined, apart from the skipper, Dasun Shanaka, who scored 36 (25), including five boundaries. Dushan Hemantha, the leg spinner, picked up two wickets, while all the others used picked one wicket each in the innings. Now in the points table, Aura after this win is at the top of the table with four wins and two losses in six games it played this season. However, the Titans found themselves at the bottom of the table with two wins and four losses in six games.
Speaking of Fernando, he finished with the most runs in the LPL’s last edition, as he scored 339 runs in 10 games for Jaffna Kings, apart from Sri Lankan batters there are some of the world’s leading T20 batters including the likes of Babar Azam, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Tim Seifert also featured in LPL 2023. It is pertinent to mention that Babar has started LPL 2023 campaign on a good note as he currently leads the highest run scorer list in the league with 235 runs in five innings.
