Council forbids Usman Khawaja to wear pro-Palestine shoes

The first test between Australia and Pakistan will kick off tomorrow at Perth on 14th December. It will be an interesting contest between the World Champions and the South Asian Giants with a new leader in the long format. However just before the Test the Apex Cricket Council has enforced some of their rules on Australia opening batter Usman Khawaja. The Council restricts Usman Khawaja and imposes strict rules on him, as per the clothing policies of the Council.

Khawaja was forbidden to wear shoes which had pro Palestine slogans, saying 'Freedom is a human right'  and 'All Lives are equal'. Khawaja was intending to wear those shoes, following his beliefs on one of the most sensitive issues in the world owing to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The Shoes were banned, on the grounds that no player is allowed to sport a Logo that is non-compliant. Owing to the violation, Khawaja would not only be banned from playing the test but will also have to pay a 75% fine on his match fee.

Aussies choose to agree to Council's term

Australia skipper Pat Cummins confirmed that Khawaja would not be wearing the shoes stating, “I spoke to him quickly and he said he won’t be. Just kind of drew attention to the rules which I don’t know if Uzzie(khawaja) was across beforehand. Uzzi doesn't want to make too big of a fuss”. With these words it is clear that Khawaja had chosen to keep his beliefs aside and not diminish his chances of playing. Cricket Australia(CA) also released a statement on the issue saying, “We support the right of our players to express personal opinions. But, the Council has rules in place which shall prohibit the display of personal messages which we expect the players to uphold”.

With this statement it is clear that Khawaja and CA have chosen to go as per the rules set by the council and avoid any conflict of interest before the series. Overall the fans will still look forward to the contest which consists of some of the great players in modern Cricket right now. Khawaja will also look forward to continuing his great form in Test matches which he has displayed so far. The series down under is something everyone will keep an eye on.
