Following Virat Kohli's surprise retirement from the Test captaincy, Rohit Sharma assumed the mantle of leadership, steering the Indian team to a remarkable second consecutive World Test Championship final appearance.

However, as the seasoned opener approaches his late 30s and grapples with recent injury setbacks, discussions surrounding India's next Test captain have begun to gain momentum. In recent times, Rohit Sharma has faced challenges in Test cricket, playing only nine matches in the last two years due to injuries. This raises questions about the 36-year-old's longevity in the longer format.

Joining the bandwagon Aakash Chopra, the former opener turned cricket analyst, has weighed in on this, presenting two exciting options for the next Test captain—Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill. According to him, either of these two promising players could lead Team India in Test cricket after Rohit Sharma's potential exit.

Akash Chopra picks Shubman Gill over Rishabh Pant at the moment

Chopra thinks that as Pant's current future in cricket looks uncertain as the batter is on a hiatus from the game due to a fatal car accident and is working hard to make a comeback. On the other hand, while looking at the long-term Chopra sees Shubman Gill as a potential Test skipper.

Shubman Gill's statistics in Test cricket, while promising, highlight areas of improvement. With a focus on Asian conditions, Gill has room to grow and establish himself as a formidable force in all forms of Cricket. On the other hand, Chopra singles out Rishabh Pant as a "24-carat gold" Test cricketer, praising his wicketkeeping skills and game-changing abilities.

Pant's dominance in Test cricket, especially on foreign soil with overseas centuries and pivotal roles in series wins makes Pant stand out, while Gill is yet to match these accomplishments, and if he can make a good recovery in international cricket then he could he well ahead of Gill in taking the test mantle from Rohit Sharma.
