Shubman Gill was in sublime before the World Cup. He finished as the highest-run-getter in Asia Cup 2023 with 303 runs including a superb century against Bangladesh and scored 178 runs in the three-match ODI series against Australia where he played he played just two matches out of the three. But in the ODI World Cup 2023 so far so far he hasn't set the stage on fire. After missing the first two matches of the World Cup because of dengue Gill has featured in all four matches since but hasn't lived up to the expectations.

Gill and Babar have been going neck-to-neck for that ODI No.1 batter position. Though Babar has been sitting in that position for quite some time now. But now his No.1 is in danger courtesy of his below-par performance in the ODI World Cup so far and Gill's great run in ODI Cricket in the last year. 

Now Gill has a golden chance to become the No. 1 ODI batter as he is just 2 points behind Babar Azam and is expected to leave him behind in the next match against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. that happens, India will have three players sitting at the top in the Cricket Governing Body's rankings. 

Virat and Rohit are not far behind

In the meantime, ex-India skipper Virat Kohli re-entered the top 5 rankings following some outstanding World Cup performances. Kohli has ascended four positions to secure the 5th rank and appears poised to make additional progress up the rankings and the Indian skipper has also gone up the ladder sitting comfortably at the 8th position with 725 points. Meanwhile, Virat shares the 5th spot with David Warner, who has also been in exceptional form during the World Cup.

De Kock is within striking distance in third place on the rankings for ODI batters following a superb start to the World Cup that has seen him score three magnificent centuries. Klaasen, who has been the best finisher in the tournament, has moved up 7 places to No. 5, his new career-high spot in ODI Rankings.
