Irfan Pathan shares his opinion on inclusion of senior players in the T20 World Cup 2024. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have not played a T20I match since November 2022. The upcoming big tournament will be played in West Indies and the USA, where the expereince of the senior batters would be beneficial. The discussion for the same has been discussed on different platforms among the experts.
Irfan has given his opinion on the same. The former Indian cricketer has felt that India needs its senior batters in the tournament, as the World Cup would be played in North America, where the pitches are not in support of the batters as well as one would think of. Pathan felt that Virat and Rohit could be handy with their experience of playing in such difficult conditions based on his experience in their career.
"I personally would like to see them. The reason for that is where we are playing the World Cup. The World Cup is in the West Indies, and those pitches have changed," said Pathan. The former left-arm pacer acknowledged the fact that the pitches have changed over the years. He added that batting would not be as easy elsewhere.
Playing conditions to make a case for seniors?
"Obviously, it's an ICC event, the pitches will be better. That's what we hope as far as the batting conditions are concerned," added Pathan. Virat is one of the best batters in the slow and difficult conditions to bat on. In the T20 World Cup 2024, Virat won the Player of the Tournament award by playing mostly on slow wickets of Bangladesh, where scoring was not easy.
Irfan added that teams do not find it easy scoring during the league in West Indies. As a result, Pathan felt that the experience of the batters with enough exposure comes into the picture. "However, if you look at the CPL (Caribbean Premier League) and local cricket there as well, the batters need to work really hard. This is where the experience comes in," concluded Pathan.
