Amol Muzumdar, a cricketing stalwart, had been at the forefront of the cricketing world even before his transition to coaching. He gained fame as the head coach of the Mumbai Ranji team until the 2022–2023 domestic season. His expertise extends beyond India, as he has held coaching positions with the South African national team and the IPL team Rajasthan Royals.
Muzumdar's association with the sport runs deep. During his illustrious 21-year playing career, he carved a niche for himself as a domestic titan, amassing over 11,000 first-class runs in 171 matches, including an impressive 30 centuries. He further showcased his versatility by participating in more than 100 List A games and 14 T20 matches. While donning the Mumbai jersey, he clinched several Ranji Trophy titles. Subsequently, he represented teams like Assam and Andhra Pradesh, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cricket.
Former coach of Indian Women’s team coach Ramesh Powar was relieved of his duties as part of an internal restructuring at the BCCI. This left the coveted position of head coach vacant. For a brief period, former India all-rounder Hrishikesh Kanitkar assumed the reins.
Finally, the Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshana Naik had the task of choosing the new coach between Amol Muzumdar, former Durham coach Jon Lewis, and former head coach Tushar Arothe and the committee placed their faith on the former Indian domestic veteran.
Muzumdar’s Vision
Muzumdar's primary objective will be to guide the Indian women's cricket team to an elusive ICC title, with the T20 World Cup set to be hosted in Bangladesh next year and the 50-over World Cup taking place in India in 2025. This dual challenge will test the mettle of Muzumdar and his team as they strive to make their mark on the international stage.
Upon his appointment, Amol Muzumdar expressed his gratitude and eagerness for the role, saying, "I am deeply honoured and privileged to be appointed as the Head Coach of the Indian Women's Cricket Team. I thank the CAC and the BCCI for placing their trust in me and believing in my vision and the roadmap for Team India.
This is a huge responsibility, and I look forward to working closely with talented players and providing them with the right preparation and guidance to excel. The next two years are extremely important as two World Cups are scheduled in the period. Together with the coaching and support staff, we will look to tick every box and give ourselves the best chance to succeed."
