The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad witnessed a day of enthralling Test cricket as India took the upper hand on Day 1 of the first Test against England. England, opting to bat first, enjoyed a brisk start but were pegged back by India's spin trio, setting the stage for a tightly contested battle.

England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett raced to a 55-run partnership, showcasing an aggressive intent. However, the introduction of spin changed the complexion of the innings. They picked up three quick wickets but England still had a decent score at lunch. However, just as England seemed back on track, Axar Patel struck again, removing Jonny Bairstow for 29 which triggered a procession. The remaining English batsmen offered little resistance, with Ben Stokes and Tom Hartley the only ones putting up substantial contributions. Ashwin and Jadeja claimed three wickets each while Patel and Bumrah managed two each.

Jaiswal steals the show!

In reply, India made a positive start as young Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma took the attack to the bowlers, especially the debutant, Hartley. They shared an 80-run stand before the skipper was dismissed by the wily Jack Leach. However, Jaiswal stole the show as he bludgeoned the visitors, scoring 76 off just 70 deliveries. At the close of play, India stood at a comfortable 119/1, trailing by 127 runs.

Day 1 was a fascinating battle between bat and ball, with both sides enjoying periods of dominance. While England's bowling attack struggled to contain the Indian batsmen in the final session, they will be desperate to put up a better show tomorrow and find a way back in this Test match. India meanwhile, will be itching to assert further dominance in the game to set up the base for a 1-0 lead in what is a long series.
