The last T20I series between India and South Africa ended in a draw when the men in blue saved the series by defeating the Proteas by a big margin of 106 runs. It was a great comeback by India after facing defeat in the 2nd T20I. There was a lot of talk about certain young players during the series, but the main discussion was about India’s rising star Shubman Gill, who was not among the runs this season. This was also a chance for him to prove himself in T20 internationals.
Gill could only manage the scores of 0 and 8 in the two matches that he played and was not looking at his best in these matches. This could be a problem as the opening slot in T20’s has a lot of players in the mix. Gill might have had a good season in the last Indian Premier League(IPL) but his T20I stats don’t match up to those performances. Ex- India cricketer Aakash chopra also gives his opinion on Gill’s performances in T20 internationals and what has been his main struggle.
There is inconsistency when it comes to Shubman Gill: Aakash Chopra
Chopra gave his analysis on Gill on his Youtube channel saying, "There is inconsistency when it comes to Shubman Gill's T20I numbers. There are 1-2 big knocks, but around it there is nothing but low scores. Also, against left-arm spin, it seems like there is an issue for him. To my understanding, he is trapped by the left-arm spinners inside the powerplay.” This statement clearly states that Gill has not always been really comfortable in T20’s and has to take opportunities when they come to make the T20 World Cup squad.
There might be some truth to Chopra’s analysis on Gill where he has shown some struggle against spin in the past as he normally likes to use the pace of the bowler. However, this does not change the fact that he is one of the biggest young talents India has right now and has risen to the ranks very early in his career. With just one big knock and one good series, he can change the minds of the selectors and fix his spot in the T20 setup as well.
The competition might be tough, but we all know that Gill has the ability to go through any obstacles with his gifted timing and amazing strokeplay. He should take some constructive criticism from experts like Chopra and come back with better performances in the next series. With the T20 world cup just around the corner it will be interesting to see how Gill can battle his way through all the competion and be the first choice opener among many candidates who are just as talented as him. Gill still has a lot of cricket left in him and he is more than capable to comeback from one bad series.
