The much-awaited T20 league from the Caribbean islands ‘CPL’ will commence in August this year but before that, the fans will get to watch a new addition to the tournament named ‘The 6ixty’.
The inaugural edition of the tournament will feature 6 men’s teams and 3 women’s teams. The tournament is set to take place from August 24 till August 28. The venue for all the games will be St Kitts stadium. The tournament is being launched in association with Cricket West Indies. To make the tournament even more exciting, the league will come up with many new and interesting rules.
The teams will have just 6 wickets to play with instead of 10. The teams will be able to unlock a third powerplay for them if they hit two sixes in the first two-over powerplay. The bowling team will be given the option to deliver five consecutive overs from the same end instead of changing it after every over.
If the bowling team fails to complete their 10 overs in the allotted 45-minute time then one fielder will be removed for the final six balls of the innings. The fans will also be involved in the games as they will be able to vote for a ‘mystery-free hit’.
“You’re going to get some people saying ‘this isn’t cricket’ but my view is that cricket is the most important element of it It’s just about trying to generate excitement and interest. It’s like what’s going on with golf right now – you have to look at things through a different lens sometimes. This is about a new audience. We’re very much going after the younger generation,” CPL CEO Pete Russell told ESPNcricinfo.
Star batsman Chris Gayle has been named the ambassador for the tournament. The tournament will also feature some big names from international cricket. The CPL CEO also has plans to host the tournament in different countries in the future.
“We plan to do four a year, that’s the starting point. Potentially, you’d like to have three in the Caribbean and one elsewhere. We’d like to play one internationally somewhere: if I could the 6ixty to Vegas, that would be a dream ticket,” Russell added.
