Former India skipper MS Dhoni has been part of the Chennai franchise since the 2008 season. From 2008 to 2015 and then from 2018 to 2022, he led the team all seasons and helped them lift the title four times. However, last year, the wicketkeeper batter led the team in the second half-season. After all, the Ranchi player decided to step down and handed over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja.
After the first half of the last season, Dhoni was asked to lead the team again. However, he couldn't help the team reach the playoffs. Meanwhile, a while after the season, the right-hander expressed his desire to play in front of the Chennai crowd before hanging his boots. Meanwhile, with less than two months left in the Indian T20 League 2023, a franchise official has confirmed that Dhoni will play for the last time.
He said that the three-time World Championship-winning skipper for India, Dhoni wants to say goodbye to the game for the last time
“We believe it will be his last as he wants to say goodbye at his favourite stadium. In any case, we should have clarity by the start of ITL,” a Chennai official told InsideSport.
MS Dhoni hasn't informed us about his decision: Chennai franchise
The franchise official added that the 41-year-old, Dhoni hasn't informed his decision about his retirement. The former further added MS is the leader of the team.
“MS hasn’t informed us about his decision. And of course, there is no pressure on him to take a call anytime soon. He is our leader and he will only do what’s best for the team. As far as the management is concerned, MS has full backing on whether he wants to continue beyond this season,” the official said.
