Day 1 of the second India vs West Indies Test concluded with the visitors taking advantage as Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja stitched a fine partnership to rebuild the innings in the third session. India thoroughly dominated the first session with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring half-centuries, but the hosts fought back in the second session, picking up a series of wickets.

With the way both India openers performed, they appeared to be repeating the first Test's scenario, but the dangerous 139-run partnership was interrupted by Jason Holder. Jaiswal fell after scoring 57 off 74 balls and India lost two more wickets in quick succession. Shubman Gill (10 off 12 balls) was the next to depart, as the right-handed batter has struggled since switching to No. 3.

Rohit was looking good to hit back-to-back centuries, but a ripper from Jomel Warrican dismissed the India captain as he made 80 off 143 balls. Virat Kohli, playing his 500th international, tried to build a good partnership with vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane but the latter fell off the last ball of the second session to give the hosts the upper hand.

Kohli, Jadeja lead India to a comfortable position

Kohli and Jadeja then ensured India do not give further wickets in the day and put on a 100+ partnership in the third session to end the first day on a high note. The former India captain took 20-plus deliveries to open his account, but since then he has been ticking the scoreboard with running between the wickets and a few boundaries. He is on the brink of his 29th Test century and scoring in his landmark game will be a cherry on the cake for him.

India finished Day 1 on 288/4 with Kohli on 87 off 161 and Jadeja on 36 off 84. The Men in Blue will want this partnership to continue for at least one more session to knock West Indies out in the first innings. West Indies, on the other hand, will look to start the day with some quick wickets to get back into the game. However, more intriguing action between the duo is on the cards for Day 2.
