India women's team captain Harmanpreet Kaur is set to face strict action from the Cricket Governing Body for her outburst in Dhaka on Saturday, July 22. Kaur is likely to receive four demerit points and be banned from two international matches for her on-field conduct and later in the post-match presentation of the third and final ODI of the series against Bangladesh.
Chasing 226, India lost two early wickets but Smriti Mandhana and Harleen Deol brought them back into the game with brilliant half-centuries. Skipper Kaur also started well by hitting a couple of boundaries but had to depart when she was adjudged leg before off a Nahida Akter delivery while trying to sweep. However, she claimed that she got a bottom edge and was enraged by umpire Tanvir Ahmed's decision.
The 34-year-old was seen expostulating with the umpire after smashing the stumps with her bat to demonstrate her frustration. She also made some gestures in the direction of the crowd as she walked back to the pavilion. The decision, however, proved to be decisive as the match ended in a draw, resulting in the series being levelled with Bangladesh winning the first game and India winning the next.
Kaur was found guilty of damaging equipment and criticising match officials
Later, at the post-match presentation ceremony, Kaur described the standard of umpiring as "pathetic". It is learned that she will receive three demerit points for equipment damage and one demerit point for criticising the match officials in public.
"There is still some deliberation going on whether she should get three demerit points or four as there are two charges -- match equipment abuse and criticism of match officials," a senior Indian Cricket Board source told PTI.
"In case there are four demerit points in a space of 24 months, you either miss a Test or two limited over games -- in this case first two games of Asiad. In case, it is three, then she will only cop financial penalty," the source added.
As per Cricket Governing Body rules, if a player earns four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, it will lead to a suspension. He/she will be banned from one Test, two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever comes next in the schedule. India's next international match will be part of the Asian Games, which will be held in Hangzhou, China. Hence a two-match ban for Kaur will impact India's campaign to clinch the gold medal.
