India batter Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to go for the surgery, at least for now. He has been suffering from back issues which made him ruled out of the ODI series against Australia, and he is also doubtful to lead the Kolkata franchise for the upcoming season of the Indian T20 League.

However, as per the reports by Cricbuzz, the 28-year-old wants to see if his back problem can be managed without surgery as the surgery can rule him out of cricketing action for almost six to seven months, which can also make him miss 50-over World Cup that is scheduled to be hosted by India later in the year, and the batter doesn’t want to take a risk.

The right-hander complained of back pain during the fourth Test between India and Australia in Ahmedabad and he was sent for scans. He also didn’t come to bat for India in their first innings. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav batted for India at number four in the ODI series against the Aussies. However, it was a forgettable series for Surya as he registered three consecutive golden ducks from the three matches.

India lost the ODI series at home after 2019

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has already mentioned Suryakumar will be getting plenty of chances until Iyer makes his return. Suryakumar is currently the number one T20I batter and recently won the award for the T20I batter of the year for 2022. However, his form hasn’t been that great in the 50-over format.

Australia has hammered India in the ODI series by 2-1, under the captaincy of Steve Smith. The visitors were trailing by 0-1, after losing by five wickets in Mumbai. After that, the Aussies did a great comeback by bowling India out for 117 runs in the second ODI in Vizag. The Australian openers didn’t give any chance to the Indian bowlers as they chased the winning total in just 11 overs. In the series decider in Chennai, the Kangaroo bowlers again did a remarkable job after bowling India for 248 runs when they were chasing a target of 270 runs set by the Aussies. Australia is the only team to win an ODI series in India since 2019.
