Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opening batter Devon Conway is having a terrific season in the 2023 Indian Premier League, scoring his fifth half-century in eight matches and exhibiting incredible consistency. The New Zealand international continued his form against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday, April 30, helping the team to post a massive score of 200 despite falling short of a well-deserved century. His spirited knock, however, went in vain as CSK lost the game by four wickets in a nail-biting finish.

Conway has had a rough start to the tournament, but once he got on track, he remains a threat to the opposition. The Kiwi star along with Ruturaj Gaikwad has given CSK a strong start so far this season. With 414 runs scored at an average of 59.14, the left-hander is now the season's second-highest run scorer.

His impressive performance against PBKS also helped him reach 5000 runs in T20 cricket. Conway has now become the player with the highest batting average in men's T20 cricket among the players who have scored at least 5000 runs. He averages 44.41, followed by Pakistan skipper Babar Azam at 44.02 and Mohammad Rizwan third at 43.95.

PBKS beat CSK in a last-ball thriller

Talking about the match, CSK opted to bat first at their home ground Chepauk Stadium, and openers Conway (92* off 52) and Ruturaj Gaikwad once again gave them a promising start. The duo put on an 86-run partnership before Sikandar Raza dismissed Gaikwad for 37 (31) in the 10th over. Shivam Dube came in at one down and played a short cameo before being dismissed in the 14th over. The PBKS bowlers tightened the screws in the last few overs but captain MS Dhoni hit the last two balls for sixes to finish the innings beautifully.

Chasing 201, Prabhsimran Singh and skipper Shikhar Dhawan gave the visitors a great start. Dhawan fell in the 5th over but stitched a brilliant 50-run partnership with his partner. CSK tried to re-enter the game with spin attack, but Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran played a blistering innings to keep them in the hunt. With nine runs needed off the last over, Matheesha Pathirana held his nerve to defend, but PBKS had the last laugh, winning the thriller in the last ball of the innings.
