In a major development for India, Mohammed Shami has been named replacement for Jasprit Bumrah for the 20-20 World Cup 2022. There were many speculations about the replacement, and many names emerged for the vacant position. Shami’s inclusion in the squad has now been officially confirmed by the Indian Cricket Board.
The veteran pacer has already reached Australia and will join the Indian team before their first warmup game in Brisbane. In addition, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur also have been added to the squad as backup players.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. Shami has reached Australia and will link up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the warm-up matches,” read the Indian Cricket Board’s statement.
“Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been named as backups and will travel to Australia shortly,” it further added.
Earlier, star Indian pacer Bumrah was ruled out of the tournament owing to a back injury. The 28-year-old was a very crucial player for the squad, but Shami comes as an ideal replacement option. Shami’s exceptional skills could fill a void in Indian death bowling, which has been struggling recently.
The team led by Rohit Sharma will play their first match of the season against arch-rivals Pakistan on the 23rd of October. The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host the extravagant event.
The Men in Blue will look to take vengeance on Pakistan, who defeated them by 10 wickets in the previous 20-20 World Cup. Captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan stole the show in the United Arab Emirates for the Men in Green. This time, the team will try to put on a similar show.
