Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam didn’t take the field at the start of day 3 in the ongoing Test match between Pakistan and New Zealand. He played a sensational knock of 161 runs in 280 deliveries in the first innings but wasn’t present on the field in the first two sessions on Day 3. Reports have suggested that the likes of Babar, Shan Masood, and Agha Salman are currently down with flue.
In Babar Azam’s absence, Sarfaraz Ahmed has taken up the onus to lead the team. Interestingly, Mohammad Rizwan, who came on the field as a substitute fielder, was also seen changing the field and moving the fielders around.
Amidst that, a bizarre incident took place when Pakistan took a DRS surrounding Devon Conway’s dismissal. In the 53rd over of the innings, Devon Conway was trapped leg-before while he was trying to play a flick off his backfoot.
Despite the appeal, the umpire didn’t raise the finger. Pakistan fielders then had a discussion and it was Sarfaraz Ahmed, who decided to take a DRS. Apparently, Mohammad Rizwan was also seen gesturing the same before the realization hits that he wasn’t authorized to take a DRS call.
For the unversed, the substitute fielders aren’t allowed to lead a team in the absence of the regular skipper. Nevertheless, Pakistan did well to take the review as the third umpire gave it out with ball-tracking confirming three reds.
Earlier, Pakistan had notched a gigantic score of 438 runs in the first innings, thanks to a sensational knock of 161 runs in 280 deliveries from Babar Azam. Agha Salman also played beautifully as he brought up his maiden ton in Test cricket. Former Pakistan skipper, Sarfaraz Ahmed amassed 86 off 153 on his Test comeback.
In reply, New Zealand batters are fighting it out in the middle. At the time of writing, New Zealand have managed to score 278 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.
