The West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran said that the loss was bittersweet. He said that they were close to winning and had already shown the world what they are capable of. In the post-match presentation ceremony, the Windies captain said that they might look to go strength to strength from the first ODI. India won the first ODI by defeating West Indies by just 3 runs. The Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan top scored with 97 runs. It was followed by the great fifties from Shubhman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.
The Indian team managed to score 308 for the loss of 7 wickets at the end of 1st innings. Mohammad Siraj provided the breakthrough for India as he bagged Shai Hope's wicket. The latter was dismissed for just 7 runs off 18 balls. Kyle Mayers was the top scored for the Caribbean, with 75 runs. Shamarh Brooks was dismissed for 46 runs, while Brandon King scored a fifty. The latter was dismissed for 54 runs. Captain Nicholas Pooran was removed for just 25 runs.
However, the West Indies put up a brave fight as they had an unbeaten partnership of 53 runs for the 7th wicket. With 5 runs required off the last ball, India managed to win by game by 3 runs.
"Feels like a win for us. Bittersweet, but yeah we keep talking about batting 50 overs and everyone saw what we are capable of and hopefully, we can go strength to strength from here," said Nicholas Pooran in the post-match conference.
The West Indies captain said that he is looking forward to the rest of the series and wanted to win it for the country. "Looking forward to the rest of the series. It was a good batting track and our bowlers did a commendable job to restrict them. It's difficult to lose but we will take this one. We need to believe in each other and I keep telling everyone that we will have our challenges, but important to focus on the positives," Pooran concluded.
