In a match that turned out to be full of ups and downs for the visitors, Punjab Kings hosted Royal Challengers Bangalore for their IPL 2023 clash. To begin with, the regular captains of the two teams did not show up at the toss due to their respective injuries. However, RCB skipper Faf du Plessis walked in to open the innings after being invited to bat first. He was set to be substituted by the impact player in the second innings.

Batting first, the 2016 finalists had a terrific start as Faf and stand-in captain Virat Kohli played explosive knocks. Together, they scored 137 runs, putting RCB in an excellent position. While the usual captain played quickly, the stand-in captain anchored his knock.

Despite not losing a single wicket, the opening partnership slowed dramatically after the 10th over of the game, putting the Royal Challengers in a tight situation. They had scored 91 at the end of the 10th over and Virat was eventually removed in the 17th over for a team score of 137.

After Virat's dismissal (59 runs in 47 balls), Nathan Ellis dismissed Du Plessis (84 in 56 balls) in the 18th over. Apart from these two, no one could help RCB. In the end, they managed to score 174/4 in the first innings. Harpreet Brar grabbed two wickets for PBKS, while Arshdeep Singh and Ellis each took one.

Punjab Kings crumble in the chase

The chase should have been simple for Sam Curran's team on their home turf, but they never looked to be in it. Mohammed Siraj struck the right chord when he took the first wicket on the second ball. After that, it was all downhill for the PBKS batters.

While Prabhsimran Singh tried to hold the fort, the team's other batters were unable to contribute much. He hit a quickfire 46 off 30 balls, but wickets continued to fall at the other end. After that, Jitesh Sharma and Harpreet Brar tried to take the team over the line, but Siraj emerged at the top once again. He ended his spell with the figures of 4-0-21-4.

In the end, Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Punjab Kings by 24 runs in the 27th Indian Premier League 2023 match as they restricted the home side to a score of 150 in 18.2 overs.
