Ahead of the first Test of the Ashes 2023, England skipper Ben Stokes had admitted that Stuart Broad's selection in the playing XI was based on his record against Australia's opening batter David Warner. The English pacer justified Stokes' decision by dismissing the southpaw in the first innings on Day 2 in Birmingham on Saturday.

Australia resumed from their overnight score of 14-0 after England declared for 393 with two wickets in hand on the first day. The Aussie openers Warner and Usman Khawaja survived till the stumps, aiming for a good fresh start. However, England made an early breakthrough when Broad dismissed Warner and Marnus Labuschagne in consecutive deliveries.

Broad has been a nightmare for Warner in the red-ball cricket. The right-arm seamer once again got rid of the Australian, dismissing him for nine runs. Broad has now taken Warner's wicket 15 times in 27 matches, the most by any bowler. Warner was dismissed four times for duck by Broad in his career. The 36-year-old averages 18.93 in Test cricket and just 4 in the Ashes on English soil.

"It’s just one of those things – like Ashwin against me. ‘Broady’ has been an unbelievable performer over many years. What the Ashes brings, it’s so hard to look past someone like that. It’s so hard to look past Jimmy and ‘Robbo’ as well, he’s been incredible over the last year in all conditions. I’m very happy with the team we’ve ended up picking,” Stokes said ahead of the first Test.

We’ll see a different Davey this time: Pat Cummins said ahead of the series opener

Meanwhile, Australia captain Pat Cummins had expressed confidence in their veteran opener, saying that we will see a different Warner in this series. Broad had dismissed Warner seven times in 10 innings during the 2019 campaign.

“Davey’s, I’m sure, been thinking about Broad a lot over the last four years and if he got another chance how he is going to play against him. It didn’t go Davey’s way last time, but we’ll see a different Davey this time,” Cummins said.
