Nepal will join India and Pakistan in the same group for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. This development was confirmed after the former trumped UAE in the final of the ACC Premier Cup which took place on Thursday. Nepal won the game on the back of Lajit Rajbanshi’s four wicket haul. Gulsan Jha’s made a wonderful 67 for Nepal as they beat UAE by 7 wickets at Kirtipur. It was a dominating performance from Nepal in the end.
Courtesy of this fine win, Nepal have earned in spot in Group A along with the likes of India and Pakistan, while Group B has Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. While the groups have been finalised, there have been no conclusions as to where India's games will be held.
The four neutral venues that have been shortlisted are UAE, Sri Lanka, England and Oman. A round of reports from Pakistan that have come in claimed that the ACC has sent out a proposal to stop the Asia Cup and play a five nation tournament, instead. This tournament, however, if it is played, will exclude Pakistan. But such reports were quashed by the ACC on Monday.
The 2022 edition of the Asia Cup was held in the UAE
India and Pakistan have tried to find a solution of having India's games at a neutral venue while all other games to be played in Pakistan. But the PCB and the ICB have not come to concrete conclusions on this yet. Jay Shah had earlier categorically stated that India will not be able to travel to Pakistan unless it gets the required approval from the government.
"There has been exchange of messages but no discussion or proposal to postpone the Asia Cup has been floated," An ACC member was quoted as saying by MY Khel. "Secondly, if the Asia Cup is cancelled, PCB will be intimated first. Nothing of that sort has happened till now. The ACC chairman (Shah) hasn't yet put anything on record. He added.
The last edition of the Asia Cup took place in 2022. It was held in the UAE in the T20 format. Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in the final and were crowned Champions of Asia. This year, if the tournament takes place, then it will be held in the 50-over format.
