A massive 363-run stand by Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls on Day 2 put New Zealand in a commanding position in the second Test against Sri Lanka. Resuming from an overnight score of 155-2, the duo put together the fifth-highest partnership in Tests for New Zealand and took their team to a mammoth first innings total of 580 runs. Sri Lankan bowlers were made to toil hard in the field as Williamson (215 off 296) and Nicholls (200* off 240) became the first Kiwi players to score double-centuries in the same innings.

With more than 8000 runs and 28 hundreds at an average of 54.89, Williamson is undoubtedly one of the greatest New Zealand Test better ever. The right-hander hit his sixth Test double century today - just behind former India captain Virat Kohli, who scored seven double tons. He surpassed former England Test captain Joe Root (five double centuries) to become second in the list of most double hundreds by fab four.

Williamson is back in the business

Six months ago, there were concerns that Williamson, who was going through a poor run of form, would be able to rediscover his best with the bat. One of the greats of the modern generation shut down all his critics by pulling off an epic win over Sri Lanka in the first Test of the same series. In a nail-biting finish, the 32-year-old scored his 28th Test century and took the team home in a last-ball thriller. Picking up from where he left off, Williamson scored a double century in the second Test to claim the Black Caps' fourth-best Test total when asked to bat first.

Apart from Williamson and Nicholls, the opening batter Devon Conway also contributed well for their team with 78 off 108 balls. The Lankan bowlers were clueless as they were not able to pick any wickets in the first two sessions of Day 2. In reply, Sri Lanka lost two wickets for 26 runs before stumps on the second day. With New Zealand leading the visitors by 554 runs, their comeback in the game looks almost impossible.
