The 2023 season of the Lanka Premier League started on a good note. The defending champions Jaffna Kings defeated Colombo Strikers by 21 runs in their maiden appearance in the league. The collective bowling performance from the Kings helped them to claim the win. Vijayakanth Viyaskanth was awarded Player of the Match for his good spell in the match.
The match had some big names in T20 cricket like Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Maheesh Theekshana. The biggest of them all, Babar Azam, did not have a great game against the Kings. The 28-year-old was dismissed for just 7 runs by the Kings’ captain Thisara Perera. It was a huge dent in the innings of the Strikers.
Commentator's funny dig at Babar Azam
During the game, there was rather a funny moment where the commentator HD Ackerman funnily said “Babar Azam is fine, Babar is fine. He saw the team sheet and there was no Prabath Jayasuriya, so he is fine” and took a funny dig at Babar Azam. Azam does not have a great record against Prabath Jayasuriya in the longest format of the game, which was pointed out by HD Ackerman indirectly.
In the recently concluded Test series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the left-arm orthodox spinner dismissed the Pakistani captain in all three innings they faced each other. In Galle, Jayasuriya dismissed Azam for just 13 runs, as the star batter from Lahore was caught behind. In the second innings of the Test, Azam was trapped leg before wicket for 24 runs.
In the second Test in Colombo, Prabath again trapped Babar leg before wicket for 39 runs. In Test cricket, the two have faced each other in four matches. Jayasuriya has dismissed Babar in all but one inning. In the faceoff, Babar has scored 172 runs in 324 balls at an average of 28.7. Jayasuriya has dismissed Azam on six occasions, which is a very good feat. The 31-year-old has dismissed Babar Azam thrice in both 2022 and 2023 in the longest format of the game.
