Shubman Gill brought Mumbai Indians (MI) into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 play-offs, then on Friday he knocked them out with a blistering century in Qualifier 2. The 23-year-old had earlier ended the road for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with his second IPL ton, allowing MI to claim fourth place, but he hit another century to eliminate them and propel Gujarat Titans (GT) to their second consecutive final.

Entering the 16th edition of the cash-rich league on the back of centuries for Team India in all three formats of the game, the right-handed batter continued his impressive form with being the backbone of GT's batting line-up. The youngster currently owns the Orange Cap with 851 runs at an average of 60.78 and a strike rate of 156.43, and also became only the second Indian batter after Virat Kohli to cross the 800-run mark in a single IPL season.

This was probably my best innings so far in the IPL: Gill

In his last four matches, Gill has scored three centuries with the latest coming against MI, where he scored 129 runs off 60 balls including 10 maximums and seven fours - the highest score by a batter in the IPL playoffs. Officials didn't have to scratch their heads to decide the player of the match on Friday, as the day was entirely about Gill's record knock, which guided GT to a 62-run victory.

Speaking at the post-match press presentation, Gill said: "I think this was probably my best innings so far in the IPL. For me, it is playing ball to ball, over to over. The over where I hit three sixes gave me the momentum to go big. That's when I realised it could be my day. It was a good wicket to bat on as well. Not a conscious decision, you keep inventing as a batter but for me the belief is more important."

After the game, MI mentor Sachin Tendulkar praised the GT opener for his magnificent display. Meanwhile, an image of the legendary batter and the young sensation having some intense conversation sitting in the dugout is doing the rounds on social media.
