India and Australia are in the midst of the third ODI at Rajkot, with India holding a 2-0 series lead. Australian opener David Warner has been in stellar form, notching his third consecutive fifty in the series with a brilliant 56 off 34 balls in the ongoing match. Despite Warner's efforts, India aims to maintain their winning streak in the series. But the spotlight was all on Steven Smith who completed his 5000 ODI runs.

The former Australian skipper till now had a cold ODI series by his standards. In the two ODIs which Smith played he had scored only 41 runs. So, in the third ODI match, all eyes were on the veteran batter to score some big runs, especially in a batting paradise like Rajkot. The 34-year-old batter did not disappoint his fans as the legendary batter scored a brilliant 74 runs off just 61 deliveries. The incredible innings included eight boundaries and one mighty six.

Also, it is Smith’s comeback in this series after injury and this record of Smith will also fill him with confidence before the World Cup. It is also to be considered that the Australian team depends on the form of Smith especially when the World Cup is happening on Indian soil. After completing 5,000 ODI runs, the prolific batter became the 17th player in Australian history to achieve this landmark.

The 34-year-old batter has shown some tremendous form in the ODI matches that he has played on Indian soil. Smith played his first ODI match against the Indian team in the year 2010 and has from then onwards dominated the Indian team across all the formats. In the 14 matches that he has played so far in the limited overs format, the legendary batter scored more than 536 runs.

Meanwhile, the star batter had averaged more than 40 on Indian soil and hence will be a vital clog in the Australian setup for the World Cup. Also, the highlight of all these innings has been that Smith has scored runs at a strike rate of 90.84 including four half-centuries and one century.
