Pakistan star batter Babar Azam's captaincy debut in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 did not go well as his side, Colombo Strikers, lost to Jaffna Kings by six wickets. The Kings are now back in the playoff race after ending their two games losing streak. However, Babar was captaining the Strikers in this game as their regular skipper, Niroshan Dickwella, was injured.

Whereas at the start of the game, Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat first, the strikers had a decent opening partnership as Pathum Nissanka and the Pakistani skipper added 57 runs in seven overs. Although Kings came back with the wickets of both openers in a span of 8 balls, Dilshan Madushanka dismissed Babar for 24 (21). There were no significant contributions from batters coming after the dismissal of openers, and Nissanka was the top scorer of the side with his 36 (25) to post the competing total of 146/8.

In this case, it was a quick fire from Afghanistan's star openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Nishan Madushka that took the team total above 50 runs inside five overs. Gurbaz smashed 39 (21) and was dismissed in the sixth over; his innings included three sixes and an equal number of fours. Madushka was the top scorer for the Kings, as he scored 46 (32) and was dismissed when his side's total was 128/4 in 12.5 overs.

In the end, three-time champion Jaffna won the game after losing back-to-back games in the league. They chased down the target with 33 balls remaining and six wickets remaining in the 13th match of the LPL 2023. Jaffna Dunith Wellalage won the Player of the Match award for his 2/9 in three overs. Now in the points table, Thisara Perera-led Jaffna is in the third spot with three wins in six games, while after the loss, Colombo is in the fourth spot with two wins in five games.
