There were concerns about India captain Rohit Sharma's form ahead of the multi-format tour of West Indies. However, the opening batter has responded with his bat, shattering several records in the ongoing two-match Test series. Rohit smashed his second overseas Test century in the first Test in Dominica and he did not disappoint the fans in the series decider either.

Following West Indies' decision to field first in Trinidad on Thursday, openers Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal once again laid a solid platform with 139 runs. Jaiswal departed after scoring 57, but Rohit continued to play sensible cricket and looked well-set to smash consecutive hundreds. However, he fell on 80, but in the process, he set several records to his name.

Rohit has now surpassed former India captain MS Dhoni to become the country's 5th highest run scorer. He is also the second-highest run-scorer among active Indian players. The right-handed batter now boasts a total of 17,298 international runs in 443 appearances, including 44 centuries and 92 fifties. Former Indian captain Virat Kohli tops the list of active cricketers (25,548 runs from 500 matches).

Rohit surpasses legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar with his half-century

With an innings that consisted of 9 fours and 2 sixes at the top of the order, Rohit also completed 2000 Test runs as an opener. He has now amassed 2,035 runs in 25 Tests as an opener at a magnificent average of 53.55, the highest among Indians who have scored at least 2,000 runs as an opener. Rohit is ranked seventh overall in this regard, surpassing legends like Sunil Gavaskar (50.29) and Virender Sehwag (50.04).

In addition, with his 15th Test half-century, the 36-year-old also completed 2000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC) history. He is currently India’s highest run-getter in the WTC which got underway in 2019. Kohli is the second Indian batter in the list with 1942 runs from 34 matches at an average of 37.34 including 3 centuries and nine fifties.
