The third Day of the first Test between India and Australia got underway on Saturday. India resumed their innings on 321/7 with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel at the crease. Jadeja fell early in the day after a well-made 70. After his dismissal, it seemed as if India are going to get bowled out soon, however, Mohammed Shami provided great support to Axar Patel and took the Indian innings forward.
The duo added 52 runs for the ninth wicket as Shami scored a terrific 37 with the help of two fours and three sixes. After Shami’s dismissal, Patel decided to press on the accelerator and march towards his hundred, however, he eventually fell 16 runs short of the landmark as he was deceived by a slower ball by Pat Cummins. India were finally all-out for 400 as Axar Patel departed for 84.
After having a massive lead of 223 runs, Indian bowlers were on the attacking mode right from the word go. Ravichandran Ashwin gave India their first strike as he dismissed Usman Khawaja who edged the ball straight to Virat Kohli at first slip. Soon Ravindra Jadeja joined the party as he got rid of the dangerous Marnus Labuschagne to give Australia their second blow.
Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was in full form as he wreaked havoc on the Australian batting. He picked up four wickets in four overs to complete his 31st five wicket-haul in Test cricket. Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Matt Renshaw, Peter Handscomb and Alex Carey were his five scalps in the second innings. It only took ten overs for the Tamil Nadu Spinner to complete his five-wicket haul.
Australia got bundled out for 91 in the second innings
Courtesy of Ashwin’s fifer, Australia were bundled out for just 91 in the second innings as India won the first Test by a massive margin of an innings and 132 runs. Apart from Ashwin, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja also picked up two wickets each. Jadeja was also awarded ‘Player of the Match’ for picking seven wickets and scoring 70 runs with the bat during the match. India have taken a 1-0 lead in the four-match series and will look to continue their winning momentum in the upcoming Tests.
Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with reactions on India’s emphatic win. Here are some of the Tweets:
